Most small businesses find out whether they have backups on the day they need them. You can avoid that with a single page.
Keep three copies, in two places
Keep the working copy, a second copy on another device or service, and a third one offsite. A fire, theft or ransomware attack shouldn’t be able to reach all three.
Write down what matters
List your accounting files, customer records, email, website and shared drives. Next to each one, write who owns it and how often it changes.
Automate it
Any backup that depends on someone remembering will eventually stop. Schedule it, and have failures send an alert to a person.
Test a restore
This is the step people skip. Once a quarter, restore one real file and open it. A backup you haven’t restored is only a hope.
